Matz Sels arrives from Strasbourg
On this day in 2024 Forest sign goalkeeper Matz Sels from Strasbourg on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
Matz Sels arrived from Strasbourg as Forest tried to bring calm and experience to a demanding Premier League survival fight.
The Belgian goalkeeper signed a three-and-a-half-year deal, giving Forest another senior option in a position that had already seen heavy turnover since promotion. At 31, Sels brought experience from France, Belgium, England and international football, but he still had to prove himself quickly in a side under pressure.
The signing aged well. Sels became a regular in goal and gave Forest a steadier presence behind the defence. His shot-stopping and composure helped make the move feel more important than a routine January deadline signing.
By the following season, Sels had established himself as Forest’s regular goalkeeper and later earned a new contract. What began as a practical late-window deal turned into one of the more successful pieces of recruitment from that period.
