Johnson & Garner boost play-off chase
On this day in Nottingham Forest history in 2022 Forest beat Bristol City during the Championship play-off chase.
Nottingham Forest strengthened their Championship play-off push with a controlled 2–0 win over Bristol City at the City Ground.
Brennan Johnson opened the scoring in the first half when his deflected shot found the bottom corner, continuing the excellent run of form that made him one of the key players in Steve Cooper’s revived side. James Garner added the second after the break, giving Forest the breathing space they needed.
Forest were no longer just recovering from a poor start to the season. By this stage, Cooper’s team had become a serious play-off contender, with younger players such as Johnson and Garner giving the side energy, quality and belief.
Forest finished the afternoon close to the top six and kept building towards one of the club’s most important modern campaigns. A few months later, they won the Championship play-offs at Wembley and returned to the Premier League for the first time since 1999.
