Parker seals League Cup final place
On this day in Nottingham Forest history in 1989 Forest beat Bristol City to reach the League Cup final.
Nottingham Forest reached the League Cup final after a tense 1–0 extra-time win away to Bristol City completed a 2–1 aggregate semi-final victory.
The tie had been level after a 1–1 draw at the City Ground, so the second leg at Ashton Gate carried a tight, awkward edge. Bristol City pushed Forest deep into the evening, and the contest had to go beyond 90 minutes before the decisive moment arrived.
Garry Parker scored the only goal in the 114th minute, digging out a shot from the middle of a muddy penalty area to finally break Bristol City’s resistance and send Brian Clough’s side through. It was the kind of semi-final goal that did not need to be spectacular to become important: late, decisive, and tied directly to a Wembley place.
Forest went on to face Luton Town in the final at Wembley. They won 3–1, adding the League Cup to a season that also brought success in the Simod Cup and showed again how dangerous Clough’s side remained in knockout football.
