Yates rescues Stoke draw late
On this day in 2022 ten-man Forest rescue a 2–2 draw against Stoke City.
Ten-man Forest rescued a 2–2 draw against Stoke City at the City Ground through a stoppage-time Ryan Yates equaliser.
Brennan Johnson had put Forest ahead in the second half, finishing from Max Lowe’s cross, but Stoke turned the game around through Josh Maja and a Lewis Baker penalty. The penalty came after Brice Samba was sent off, forcing Joe Worrall to go in goal because Forest had already used their substitutions.
Yates supplied the late moment that changed the result. James Garner’s free-kick struck the crossbar and bounced up, and Yates reacted quickest to head the ball in from close range for the equaliser.
The draw was not the clean result Forest wanted, but it helped maintain the sense that Steve Cooper’s side had fight as well as form. A few months later, that resilience would carry them through the play-offs and back to the Premier League.
