Leicester draw starts ZDS final tie
On this day in 1992 Forest draw 1–1 at Leicester in the ZDS Cup Northern Area final first leg.
Forest began the Zenith Data Systems Cup Northern Area final with a 1–1 draw away to Leicester City.
Scot Gemmill scored the Forest goal in the first leg at Filbert Street, leaving the tie finely balanced. Forest had avoided defeat away from home, but the result also meant there was still work to do in the return match at the City Ground.
The ZDS Cup did not carry the weight of the major domestic trophies, but it still offered a route to Wembley. For Brian Clough’s side, it was another cup competition in a season already filled with knockout football and fixture pressure.
Forest went on to win the second leg 2–0, progressing 3–1 on aggregate against Leicester. They later reached the final at Wembley, where they beat Southampton 3–2 after extra time. The draw at Leicester was therefore the first step in the final stage of a successful ZDS Cup run.
