Liverpool draw seals League Cup final
On this day in Nottingham Forest history in 1980 Forest draw 1–1 at Liverpool to reach another League Cup final.
Forest reached another League Cup final by drawing 1–1 with Liverpool at Anfield and winning the semi-final 2–1 on aggregate.
John Robertson scored from the penalty spot after 24 minutes, giving Brian Clough’s side the platform they needed in the second leg. Liverpool equalised late through David Fairclough, but the draw was enough to carry Forest through.
The result continued the club’s impressive League Cup record during one of the most successful periods in its history. Forest had already beaten Liverpool 1–0 in the first leg, so avoiding defeat at Anfield completed another major semi-final success.
Forest went on to face Wolverhampton Wanderers in the final at Wembley, where they lost 1–0. The Anfield draw still marked another important cup achievement, taking Forest back to Wembley and confirming how consistently Clough’s side could handle high-pressure ties.
