Vellios overhead kick wins goal award
On this day in Nottingham Forest history in 2016 Apostolos Vellios scores an overhead kick for Forest at Rotherham.
Apostolos Vellios produced one of Nottingham Forest’s most spectacular modern goals with an overhead kick at Rotherham United.
Forest drew 2-2 with Rotherham in the Championship at the New York Stadium, with Matt Mills and Vellios scoring for Forest. Vellios’ goal came in the 85th minute, when the ball dropped awkwardly in the penalty area and he reacted instantly, throwing himself backwards into an overhead kick that sent Forest 2-1 ahead.
The finish stood apart from the match because it turned a loose, difficult ball into a clean acrobatic strike. It gave Forest a late lead away from home, but Rotherham responded before full-time to deny them victory.
The match ended in frustration rather than a win, but Vellios’ strike lived on beyond the scoreline. It was later voted Nottingham Forest’s Goal of the Season.
