Brian Clough tribute unites derby rivals
On this day in 2014 Forest and Derby fans applaud Brian Clough at the City Ground.
Nottingham Forest and Derby County supporters shared a rare moment of unity to remember Brian Clough at the City Ground.
The Championship derby carried its usual rivalry, but the match also fell close to the tenth anniversary of Clough’s death. Supporters from both clubs applauded during the game, recognising a manager whose achievements shaped the histories of Forest and Derby in different but deeply connected ways.
Clough had led Derby to the First Division title before later taking Forest from the Second Division to the league title and two European Cups. That shared connection gave the tribute a weight that went beyond the fixture itself.
The match finished 1-1, with Britt Assombalonga scoring for Forest before Ryan Shotton equalised for Derby. On a day usually defined by rivalry, both sets of supporters paused to honour the manager who had left such a powerful mark on both clubs.
