Transfer embargo follows FFP breach
On this day in Nottingham Forest history in 2014 Forest are handed a Football League transfer embargo after breaching Financial Fair Play rules.
Nottingham Forest were hit with a Football League transfer embargo after breaching Financial Fair Play rules, adding a serious off-field problem to an already difficult Championship period.
The sanction came after the club exceeded the permitted loss limits under the Football League’s FFP system. It meant Forest’s recruitment was restricted at a time when supporters were still hoping the squad could be strengthened for a promotion push.
Transfer embargoes rarely create one dramatic football moment, but they affect the mood around a club. For Forest, this one became part of the wider frustration of the mid-2010s, when ambition, spending and instability did not come together into sustained progress on the pitch.
The FFP restrictions continued into the following season before the club confirmed they would be lifted in May 2016. By then, Forest had spent another Championship cycle outside the promotion picture.
