Dave Bassett appointed Forest manager
On this day in Nottingham Forest history in 1997 Forest appoint Dave Bassett as manager.
Dave Bassett became Nottingham Forest manager after the club’s relegation from the Premier League, taking charge at a difficult moment in the club’s post-Clough era.
Forest had just dropped out of the top flight, and supporters were looking for a quick response after a disappointing season. Bassett arrived with a reputation for organisation, directness and promotion know-how, qualities that made him a practical appointment for the challenge ahead.
His impact was felt during the following campaign as Forest built a strong Division One side around players such as Pierre van Hooijdonk, Kevin Campbell and Steve Stone. The team responded with consistency and confidence, quickly turning frustration into belief.
Bassett’s appointment became important because of what followed. Forest won the 1997–98 Division One title and returned to the Premier League at the first attempt, making his arrival a key turning point in the club’s late-1990s story.
