Clough final Forest match at Ipswich
On this day in 1993 Brian Clough manages his final Forest match at Ipswich Town.
Brian Clough’s final afternoon as Nottingham Forest manager ended in a 2–1 defeat away to Ipswich Town at Portman Road, bringing down the curtain on one of the most influential reigns English football had seen.
Forest were already relegated from the Premier League, but the match still carried huge emotional weight. Nigel Clough scored Forest’s goal, giving the afternoon a poignant family connection as his father’s long spell in charge came to an end.
The result itself mattered less than the occasion. Brian Clough had transformed Forest from a struggling Second Division side into champions of England and Europe across 18 extraordinary years.
There was no dramatic farewell ceremony. Instead, the afternoon carried a quieter feeling of exhaustion and gratitude as one of football’s most remarkable managerial stories came to a close.
