Pearce penalty sees off Middlesbrough
On this day in 1995 Stuart Pearce scores a controversial penalty as Forest beat Middlesbrough 1–0 in the Premier League.
Nottingham Forest edged Middlesbrough 1–0 at the City Ground through an early Stuart Pearce penalty — but the decisive moment came with controversy attached.
The key incident arrived after eight minutes, when Forest were awarded a penalty which the televised match footage presented as a debatable decision. Pearce stepped up and converted from the spot, giving Forest a lead they would protect for the rest of the afternoon.
That single goal shaped the whole match. Middlesbrough had Juninho in their midfield and enough quality to make the game awkward, but Forest kept the scoreline locked at 1–0. What might have looked like a routine home win on paper had a sharper edge because of the disputed penalty award.
For Forest, Pearce’s goal was another reminder of his value beyond defending and leadership. He had already become one of the club’s defining modern players, and this was exactly the kind of hard-edged home win that suited his presence: narrow, stubborn, and decided by his left foot.
