Woan goal seals Everton thriller
On this day in Nottingham Forest history in 1995 Forest beat Everton 3-2 at the City Ground with Ian Woan scoring the decisive goal.
Nottingham Forest edged Everton 3-2 at the City Ground in a Premier League match that became tighter than it first looked.
Forest moved into a strong position through a Dave Watson own goal after 17 minutes and a Jason Lee goal shortly afterwards. That quick burst put the home side 2-0 up and gave the game the feel of an afternoon Forest might control comfortably.
Everton, though, came back into it. Paul Rideout scored before Ian Woan struck what proved to be the decisive Forest goal in the 64th minute. Bryan Roy was credited as the provider, and Woan beat Neville Southall with a left-foot shot from 25 yards. Rideout scored again late on, leaving Forest to protect the lead through the closing stages.
The final whistle confirmed a 3-2 win, but the match was remembered as much for its tension as for the result. Forest had built the platform, lost some control, and still found enough through Woan’s goal to beat a strong Everton side at home.
