Victory over Aston Villa boosts title run
On this day in Nottingham Forest history in 1977 Forest beat Aston Villa 2-0 during the First Division title season.
Nottingham Forest strengthened their remarkable early First Division momentum by beating Aston Villa 2-0 at the City Ground.
Forest were newly promoted, but Brian Clough’s side were already showing that they belonged at the top level. Tony Woodcock and John Robertson scored the goals, giving Forest another important win in what was quickly becoming far more than a survival campaign.
The match sat inside a powerful early-season run. Forest had already shown they could compete with established First Division sides, and victory over Villa added another layer of belief to a team that was still new to the division but playing with discipline and confidence.
What made the result more memorable was what followed. Forest went on to win the 1977-78 First Division title, one of the great achievements in English football history. This win over Aston Villa was one of the building blocks in that astonishing league campaign.
