Final 1st Div match before Prem League
On this day in 1992 Forest complete final season before Premier League era.
Nottingham Forest completed their final Football League First Division season before the arrival of the Premier League with a 3–0 defeat away to West Ham United at the Boleyn Ground.
The result brought an end to the last campaign of the old First Division as English football prepared for a major structural change. Forest finished eighth, still carrying many of the qualities associated with Brian Clough’s strongest sides but no longer quite close enough to challenge at the very top.
The match itself was a disappointing finish to the league season, but its place in the calendar gives it wider historical meaning. It marked the end of Forest’s final campaign before the breakaway Premier League reshaped the top level of English football.
Forest entered the new era with the prestige of the Clough years still attached to the club, but also with uncertainty about whether they could maintain their place among the leading sides in a rapidly changing game.
