FOREST HISTORY · Historic event
FA Cup winners for the second time
On this day in 1959 Forest win the FA Cup for the second time.
Forest defeated Luton Town 2-1 at Wembley to win the FA Cup for the second time in the club’s history.
Roy Dwight opened the scoring, and Tommy Wilson added a second only four minutes later, giving Forest early control of the final. The match then changed dramatically when Dwight suffered a broken leg after scoring, leaving Forest to protect their lead without the option of a substitute.
Luton pulled one back in the second half and created pressure during the closing stages, but Forest held firm. The victory was remembered not only for the trophy, but for the resilience needed to defend the advantage with injured players and no modern safety net from the bench.
Forest had first won the FA Cup in 1898, and this second triumph gave the club another major Wembley achievement. In front of 100,000 spectators, they secured one of the greatest victories in Forest’s post-war history.
