Big title run draw at West Brom
On this day in 1978 Forest draw at West Brom in the title-winning season.
Nottingham Forest were already champions, but the 2-2 draw away to West Bromwich Albion still belonged to the rhythm of their title-winning season.
Brian Clough’s side went to The Hawthorns near the end of their first season back in the First Division. Ian Bowyer scored for Forest in the first half, and John Robertson added another from the penalty spot as the champions took a point away from home.
The scoreline was less important than the sense of control around the team. Forest had already done the hard work, but matches like this still helped explain why the achievement felt so remarkable: they were newly promoted, yet still moving through the final weeks like a side comfortable at the top.
For supporters, the afternoon sat neatly inside the wider celebration of 1977-78. It was not the day the title was won, but it was another reminder that Forest had become champions without losing their competitive edge.
