Pearce assists England WC quarter-final
On this day in 1990 Stuart Pearce assists England’s World Cup quarter-final opener.
Stuart Pearce played a direct part in one of England’s most dramatic Italia 90 nights when his cross helped break open the World Cup quarter-final against Cameroon.
The match finished England 3-2 Cameroon after extra time, but it was anything but routine. In the first half, Pearce advanced on the left and delivered a precise cross into the box. David Platt met it from close range and powered a downward header past Thomas N’Kono, giving England the lead.
Cameroon later turned the match around before Gary Lineker’s two penalties rescued England and sent them through. Des Walker also started, meaning two Forest defenders were on the pitch as England reached a World Cup semi-final for the first time since 1966.
Pearce’s assist was not just a footnote. It placed a Forest player inside one of the defining England matches of the early 1990s, on a night remembered for tension, relief and the sense that England were edging closer to something rare.
