Carey begins managerial era
On this day in 1963 Forest appoint Johnny Carey as manager.
Johnny Carey took charge of Nottingham Forest at the start of an important First Division spell for the club.
Carey arrived with a respected football background and brought steady authority to the manager’s office. Forest were not entering a golden age, but his appointment gave the club a clear football direction during an important period in the 1960s.
His most remembered season came in 1966-67, when Forest finished second in the First Division and reached the FA Cup semi-final. That side came close to placing the club at the very top of the English game, competing in a league era packed with powerful names and demanding fixtures.
For supporters, Carey’s spell remains tied to one of Forest’s strongest league finishes before the Brian Clough years. It was a reminder that the club had serious ambition and real quality well before the European glory that later defined its history.
