Nottingham Forest damaged Arsenal’s title chase with a 3-1 win at Highbury.

Arsenal were First Division leaders, which made the result one of Forest’s most eye-catching away wins of the late 1980s. Going to Highbury and beating a side chasing the championship required more than organisation. Forest needed attacking quality and the confidence to take their chances.

Nigel Clough, Franz Carr and Stuart Pearce scored for Forest, giving Brian Clough’s team a result that carried weight beyond the normal league table. The range of scorers also reflected the balance of the side: Clough’s intelligence, Carr’s attacking threat and Pearce’s force from full-back all contributed to a famous away day.

The 3-1 win stood out because it came against the leaders on their own ground. For Arsenal, it was a blow in a title race. For Forest, it was a reminder that Clough’s side could still unsettle the best teams in the division.
