Four goal win over Spurs

On this day in Nottingham Forest history in 1980 Forest beat Tottenham 4-0 at the City Ground.

Iconic match memories

Well remembered match for any historically notable reason

Nottingham Forest produced a commanding 4-0 First Division win over Tottenham Hotspur at the City Ground while still carrying the status of European Cup holders.

The timing made the result stand out. Forest were competing on several fronts, with their European Cup defence still part of the wider season, yet they still had enough authority to overwhelm Spurs in a league match.

Kenny Burns scored twice and Trevor Francis scored twice, turning the second half into a heavy home win. Burns’ double from defence and Francis’ double from attack showed the range of threats in Brian Clough’s side.

The 4-0 scoreline needs little embellishment. Forest beat Tottenham heavily, kept their league standards high, and gave supporters another reminder of the strength of the side Clough had built.
