Win over Leicester extends trophy run
On this day in 1988 Forest beat Leicester City 2-1 in a League Cup fourth-round replay.
Nottingham Forest kept their League Cup run alive by beating Leicester City 2-1 in a fourth-round replay at the City Ground.
The East Midlands tie had needed a second match after a 0-0 draw at Filbert Street, so the replay carried the tension of a cup night that still had to be settled. Brian Clough’s side needed to turn home advantage into progress, with a quarter-final place waiting.
Nigel Clough put Forest ahead after 26 minutes, and Lee Chapman scored the decisive Forest goal after the break. Leicester had equalised in between, but Chapman’s goal restored Forest’s lead and sent the side into the next round.
The 2-1 win mattered because it became part of a much bigger League Cup story. Forest went on to beat Queens Park Rangers in the quarter-finals and Bristol City over two legs in the semi-finals.
That run ended at Wembley with a 3-1 victory over Luton Town in the 1989 League Cup final. The Leicester replay was not the final glory, but it was one of the necessary cup nights that carried Forest there.
