Victory over Luton ends losing run
On this day in 1985 Forest beat Luton Town 2-0 at the City Ground in League Division One.
Nottingham Forest beat Luton Town 2-0 at the City Ground in League Division One to end a poor run of defeats.
The match sat in the middle of a demanding top-flight season, with Forest trying to find consistency under Brian Clough against a Luton side who were competitive enough to make the fixture awkward. It was not one of the club’s grand set-piece occasions, but it did end a difficult run.
Nigel Clough put Forest ahead with a disputed 20-yard free-kick. Neil Webb added the second after goalkeeper Les Sealey pushed the ball out, reacting first to turn the chance into a goal and give the scoreline a clearer shape.
The 2-0 win ended Forest’s six-match losing run and gave Clough’s side a clean sheet and three league points at a time when stability was badly needed.
For supporters, the memory is simple and football-specific: Luton Town beaten at the City Ground, Clough and Webb on the scoresheet, and Forest back to winning ways.
