6–1 League Cup rout of West Brom
On this day in 1982 Forest beat West Bromwich Albion 6–1 in the League Cup.
Forest turned a League Cup first leg into a rout by beating West Bromwich Albion 6–1 at the City Ground.
West Brom struck first through Cyrille Regis, but Forest took control from there. Ian Wallace scored twice, John Robertson scored twice, including one penalty, and Steve Hodge and Garry Birtles also found the net.
The scoreline gave Brian Clough’s side a huge advantage in the second-round tie, overwhelming Albion before the return match could even begin to feel balanced.
West Brom won the second leg 3–1 later in the month, but the damage from the City Ground had already been done. Forest went through 7–4 on aggregate, with the first-leg 6–1 victory standing as the decisive night of the tie.
