FOREST HISTORY · Historic event
Happy birthday Larry Lloyd! (born 1948)
On this day in 1948 European Cup hero Larry Lloyd is born.
Larry Lloyd was born in Bristol before becoming one of the defining defenders of Forest’s greatest side.
Lloyd brought presence, authority and a hard edge to Brian Clough and Peter Taylor’s team. In central defence, he became a key part of the side that won the First Division title and then conquered Europe in successive seasons.
His partnership with Kenny Burns gave Forest a rugged defensive core. Behind the attacking memories of John Robertson, Trevor Francis and Garry Birtles, Lloyd represented the side’s refusal to be bullied, rushed or pulled apart.
He is remembered not just as a player who won medals, but as one who fitted the Clough-Taylor method perfectly. Forest’s rise needed character as well as talent, and Lloyd supplied plenty of both.
