Woodcock & Birtles help sink Coventry
On this day in 1979 Forest beat Coventry during their European Cup season.
Nottingham Forest kept their domestic standards high with a 3-0 First Division win over Coventry City at the City Ground during the club’s European Cup season.
The timing gave the result extra weight. Forest were chasing success in Europe, but they still had to return to league football and handle the ordinary pressure of home fixtures. Coventry were beaten clearly, with Forest showing the depth and focus that marked Brian Clough’s side.
Tony Woodcock, Garry Birtles and David Needham scored the goals. The range of scorers gave the win a familiar Forest balance: attacking threat from the forwards and contribution from elsewhere in a team that could hurt opponents in different ways.
The 3-0 victory kept Forest’s rhythm strong during a demanding period. European nights brought the headlines, but results like this showed the side’s ability to keep performing at home while bigger targets were still ahead.
