Happy birthday Archie Gemmill! (born 1947)
On this day in 1947 European Cup hero Archie Gemmill is born in Paisley.
Archie Gemmill became one of the experienced midfielders who helped Nottingham Forest through the club’s extraordinary late-1970s rise.
Born in Paisley, Gemmill had already built a strong reputation before becoming part of Brian Clough’s Forest side. His energy, intelligence and competitive edge gave the midfield another important voice during a period when the club was moving from domestic surprise to European force.
Gemmill belonged to the group that helped connect Forest’s promotion momentum with the league title season and the wider trophy-winning era. Alongside players such as John McGovern, Martin O’Neill and John Robertson, he was part of a squad that carried discipline and belief into major matches.
Gemmill was not simply a name in the squad - he was part of the football culture that helped Forest become champions of England and begin their rise towards European glory.
