Draw at Grasshoppers seals progress
On this day in Nottingham Forest history in 1979 Forest complete a European Cup aggregate win over Grasshoppers.
Nottingham Forest completed the job in Switzerland with a 1-1 draw away to Grasshoppers in the European Cup quarter-final second leg.
The hard work had been done at the City Ground, where Forest had won the first leg 4-1. That lead gave Brian Clough’s side control of the tie, but the second leg still had to be managed properly. Away European nights could quickly become awkward if the first goal went the wrong way.
Martin O’Neill scored in the 38th minute for Forest, giving the side the goal they needed to keep the tie firmly in their hands. The 1-1 draw meant Forest progressed 5-2 on aggregate, protecting the advantage built in Nottingham and moving into the semi-finals.
The result mattered because it kept Forest’s first European Cup campaign moving towards its greatest prize. Grasshoppers had not been allowed a route back into the quarter-final, and Forest left Switzerland one step closer to the final in Munich.
