Defeat to Newcastle ends cup saga
On this day in Nottingham Forest history in 1974 Forest lose to Newcastle in the FA Cup second replay.
Nottingham Forest’s controversial FA Cup quarter-final saga finally ended with a 1-0 defeat to Newcastle United at Goodison Park.
The tie had begun at St James’ Park in chaos, with the original match voided after a pitch invasion. Forest had led 3-1 before the disorder, and the decision to replay the tie left supporters with a lingering sense of injustice and frustration.
A first replay at Goodison Park finished 0-0 after extra time, so the teams had to return to the same neutral venue for a second replay. This time Newcastle found the only goal, and Forest’s long, draining cup tie was finally over.
The 1-0 defeat closed one of the strangest chapters in Forest’s FA Cup history. What might have been remembered as a quarter-final lead at Newcastle instead became a three-match controversy that ended with Forest out before the semi-finals.
