Happy birthday Brian Clough! (born 1935)
On this day in Nottingham Forest history in 1935 Forest legendary manager Brian Clough is born in Middlesbrough.
Brian Clough became the defining managerial figure in Nottingham Forest’s history.
Born in Middlesbrough, Clough arrived at Forest in 1975 with the club outside the top flight and transformed its entire sense of possibility. Within a few years, Forest had moved from the Second Division to the First Division title, then to the summit of European football.
His Forest side was built around clarity, confidence and players who understood their jobs. John Robertson, Martin O’Neill, Peter Shilton, Kenny Burns and many others became part of a team that achieved what still feels almost impossible: league champions in 1978, then European Cup winners in 1979 and 1980.
No individual is more closely connected to Forest’s greatest era. Players won the matches and lifted the trophies, but Clough shaped the belief, standards and personality of the side that changed the club forever.
