Peter Shilton wins PFA award
On this day in 1978 Peter Shilton wins PFA Player of the Year.
Peter Shilton’s PFA Players’ Player of the Year award recognised one of the outstanding individual contributions to Nottingham Forest’s title-winning season.
Goalkeepers rarely dominate individual awards in the way attacking players often do, which made Shilton’s recognition especially notable. His consistency, authority and presence gave Forest a foundation during a campaign built on discipline as much as attacking quality.
The award belonged to the 1977-78 season, when Forest won the First Division title after promotion the previous year. Shilton’s performances were central to that achievement, giving Brian Clough’s side reliability at the back while the club completed one of English football’s great league stories.
For supporters, the honour confirmed what the season had already shown. Forest were champions, and their goalkeeper had been recognised by fellow professionals as the best player in the country.
