Defeat to Valencia on Euro home debut
On this day in Nottingham Forest history in 1961 Forest lose 5–1 to Valencia in their first European home tie.
Forest’s first European home tie ended as a hard lesson against Valencia in the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup.
Valencia arrived at the City Ground already leading 2–0 from the first leg, and the second leg quickly moved away from Forest. Andy Beattie’s side were 3–0 down by half-time and eventually lost 5–1 on the night, with Billy Cobb scoring Forest’s goal.
The occasion still mattered. Forest were stepping into continental competition for the first time at home, against opponents with greater European know-how and sharper control of the tie.
Valencia won the first-round tie 7–1 on aggregate. For Forest, the night brought disappointment rather than romance, but it also marked the club’s first experience of hosting European football, long before Europe became part of the club’s defining story.
