City Ground redevelopment plans
On this day in 2026 Forest submit plans to redevelop the City Ground and expand capacity beyond 50,000.
Nottingham Forest moved the future of the City Ground into a new phase by submitting planning applications for a major redevelopment of the stadium.
The proposals were aimed at increasing capacity beyond 50,000 and keeping the club at its historic home beside the River Trent. For supporters, that mattered almost as much as the numbers. The City Ground had carried generations of Forest history, and any major stadium decision carried emotional weight as well as practical importance.
The plans focused on expanding and modernising the ground rather than replacing it with a move elsewhere. That made the announcement feel like a statement of ambition without breaking the connection to one of English football’s most recognisable homes.
At this stage, the redevelopment remained a planning step rather than completed work. But the submission showed the club trying to turn long-running stadium talk into something more concrete, with the promise of a bigger City Ground still tied to the place Forest supporters knew best.
