Nottingham Forest overwhelmed West Ham United 5-0 at the City Ground in one of the most eye-catching FA Cup third-round results of the season.

West Ham were a Premier League side, even if Sam Allardyce selected a weakened team, and Forest took full advantage. Djamel Abdoun opened the scoring with a Panenka-style penalty after Jamie Paterson turned past George Moncur in the box and was tripped.

Paterson then took over after half-time. His first goals for the club came as a second-half hat-trick, turning the tie from a strong Forest performance into a rout. Greg Halford challenged for a long, high ball and it ran to Paterson, who drilled a low left-footed shot into the far corner from 15 yards. Henri Lansbury then rolled a pass through for him to stab a low finish under Adrian, before Paterson completed the hat-trick by carrying the ball across the edge of the area and smashing low into the bottom-right corner.

Andy Reid added the fifth in stoppage time after Abdoun broke down the left and cut the ball back. Forest later beat Preston North End in a fourth-round replay, but the FA Cup run ended with a 3-1 fifth-round defeat at Sheffield United.
