Igor Jesus lifts Europa League hopes
On this day in 2025 Forest beat Utrecht 2-1 away in the UEFA Europa League.
Nottingham Forest claimed a major European away win by beating Utrecht 2-1 in the UEFA Europa League.
The night carried extra weight because Forest had waited since 1995 for an away win in Europe. Sean Dyche’s side had to work through a tense match in the Netherlands, but Arnaud Kalimuendo gave them the lead after the break and put the travelling supporters within sight of a valuable league-phase victory.
Utrecht equalised through Mike van der Hoorn from a set-piece, forcing Forest to find another response late on. The winner came from the bench: Morgan Gibbs-White found Callum Hudson-Odoi, Hudson-Odoi picked out Dan Ndoye, and after Ndoye’s header was parried, Igor Jesus pounced from close range in the 88th minute.
The 2-1 win boosted Forest’s hopes of a top-eight finish in the Europa League league phase and carried a bigger historical note too. It was Forest’s first European away win since the mid-1990s, which made the celebration feel about more than three points.
For supporters, the night showed that Forest’s European return had substance as well as nostalgia.
