Victory at Swans in promotion season

On this day in 2021 Forest beat Swansea City 4-1 away in the Championship.

Nottingham Forest gave Steve Cooper a memorable return to Swansea by winning 4-1 at the Swansea.com Stadium in the Championship and keeping a strong unbeaten run going.

The match came during the early surge of Cooper’s Forest rebuild, and the second half turned it into a statement away performance. Philip Zinckernagel opened the scoring after combining with Lewis Grabban, then Grabban slid in Brennan Johnson’s cross to make it 2-0 only two minutes later.

Swansea pulled one back through Joel Piroe, but Forest answered instead of retreating. Johnson punished a goalkeeping mistake to restore the two-goal cushion, and substitute Cafu finished from Lyle Taylor’s pass deep into stoppage time to seal the 4-1 win.

For Cooper, the result had obvious personal weight after his years in South Wales. For Forest supporters, it felt more important than that. The side were unbeaten in eight league games, playing with pace and purpose, and beginning to look like genuine promotion contenders.

That feeling proved justified. Forest’s season later ended at Wembley with promotion to the Premier League.
