Gonzalo Montiel arrived from Sevilla with one of the most unusual recent CVs of any Forest signing.

The Argentina defender joined on a season-long loan, with Forest holding an option to buy. Financial details were not officially disclosed, though Reuters reported that Argentine media put the purchase option at €11m.

Montiel arrived with major penalty-shootout pedigree. He had scored the decisive penalty in Argentina’s 2022 World Cup final shootout win over France, and had also scored the winning penalty for Sevilla in the 2023 Europa League final shootout against Roma.

Forest signed him to add defensive depth and experience during their second season back in the Premier League. The squad had survived the previous campaign, but Steve Cooper still needed more options across a demanding top-flight season.

Montiel’s Forest spell was mixed rather than defining. He made 14 Premier League appearances and 19 in all competitions before returning to Sevilla at the end of the loan, leaving the signing remembered more for his profile than for a lasting impact at the City Ground.
