Walker extra time winner at Newcastle
On this day in Nottingham Forest history in 2017 Forest knock Newcastle United out of the League Cup after extra time.
Nottingham Forest knocked Newcastle United out of the League Cup with a 3-2 extra-time win at St James’ Park.
The tie had the feel of a difficult away cup assignment, especially with Newcastle back in the Premier League. Forest, under Mark Warburton, needed to survive early trouble after Aleksandar Mitrovic put the home side ahead.
Jason Cummings then scored twice in quick succession to turn the match around. Newcastle levelled through Rolando Aarons before half-time, and the second half passed without another goal, sending the tie into extra time.
Tyler Walker settled it in the 97th minute, heading in from close range to send Forest through. The winner carried extra resonance because Tyler Walker was the son of former Forest defender and legend Des Walker.
For Forest supporters, it was a satisfying cup night: a Premier League side beaten away from home, young players involved in the decisive moments, and a dramatic extra-time finish at one of English football’s major grounds.
