Awoniyi Chelsea double boosts survival
On this day in 2023 Awoniyi scores twice as Forest draw at Chelsea.
Taiwo Awoniyi gave Nottingham Forest a valuable survival point with both goals in a 2-2 draw against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
Forest were fighting to stay in the Premier League, and away matches carried a heavy sense of risk. Steve Cooper’s side needed points wherever they could find them, and Chelsea, despite their own difficult season, still had enough quality to punish mistakes.
Awoniyi put Forest ahead in the first half, rising to head in and give the travelling supporters something to hold on to. Chelsea responded after the break through Raheem Sterling, who scored twice to turn the match around, but Forest did not fold. Awoniyi found space again and headed in the equaliser, making it 2-2 and giving his side a result that felt significant in the relegation battle.
The draw did not secure survival on its own, but it carried real weight. Forest had gone to Stamford Bridge, scored twice through their centre-forward, and left with a point. In a tight run-in, that was enough to make the afternoon feel important.
