Henderson saves seal semi final place
On this day in 2023 Forest beat Wolves on penalties to reach their first League Cup semi-final since 1992.
Forest reached a League Cup semi-final for the first time in 31 years after a 1-1 draw with Wolves ended in a 4-3 penalty shootout win at the City Ground.
The quarter-final carried edge from the start. Willy Boly, facing his former club, gave Forest the lead after 18 minutes from a corner. Serge Aurier flicked an in-swinging delivery on at the near post, Jonny helped it onto the bar, and Boly was there to force the ball in from close range.
Wolves responded after the break. Matheus Cunha found space on the right and drove a low cross to the far post, where Raul Jimenez finished from close range to level the tie. Forest had to absorb pressure, and Dean Henderson made important saves before the match reached penalties.
The shootout became Henderson’s moment. He saved from Ruben Neves and then from Joe Hodge, sending Steve Cooper’s side into the last four.
The semi-final brought Manchester United and proved a step too far, with Forest losing 5-0 on aggregate. Even so, the Wolves shootout remained a sharp cup memory from the club’s first Premier League season back.
