Awoniyi sparks first EPL away win
On this day in 2023 Forest earn their first away league win of their Premier League return season.
Nottingham Forest earned a vital first away league win of their Premier League return season by beating Southampton 1-0 at St Mary’s.
The game carried obvious relegation pressure. Forest were still trying to prove they could collect points away from the City Ground, while Southampton were also trapped near the bottom. That made the single goal feel heavier than a normal January winner.
Taiwo Awoniyi scored it in the first half after Brennan Johnson pounced on a mistake by Lyanco. Johnson raced clear and squared the ball for Awoniyi, who finished from close range. It was only Forest’s second away league goal of the Premier League season, which made the moment feel even more valuable.
Steve Cooper’s side protected the lead and climbed out of the relegation zone. The win did not solve everything, but it gave Forest something they had been missing since promotion: proof that they could take a Premier League away day, manage the pressure, and leave with three points.
