Nottingham Forest announced the signing of Brazilian midfielder Gustavo Scarpa from Palmeiras, adding one of South America’s most creative players to Steve Cooper’s squad.

Scarpa agreed to join after the end of his Palmeiras contract, with the move taking effect when the January transfer window opened. He arrived with a strong reputation in Brazil, where he had helped Palmeiras win major honours, including the Copa Libertadores.

The announcement also came with a lighter side story. Scarpa quickly became associated with his hobbies as much as his football. His skateboard arrival around Nottingham gave supporters a memorable first image, while his Rubik’s Cube solving became another part of the curiosity around him, with Forest teammates later drawn into cube challenges too.

The move did not develop as hoped. Scarpa made only a small number of Premier League appearances for Forest, later joined Olympiacos on loan, and then returned to Brazil with Atlético Mineiro in a permanent move. His Forest spell was of a curious time than an influential one.
