Cooper contract backs survival fight
On this day in 2022 Forest give Steve Cooper a new contract until 2025.
Forest’s decision to give Steve Cooper a new contract came at a moment when many clubs would have chosen the opposite path.
The team had suffered five straight Premier League defeats and pressure around Cooper was heavy after the difficult return to the top flight. Instead of dismissing him, Forest backed the manager who had led the club through the Championship play-offs and ended a 23-year absence from the Premier League.
The announcement changed the mood. It did not remove the problems on the pitch, but it gave supporters a clear sign that the club still trusted Cooper to manage the turbulence of promotion, recruitment and survival pressure.
That faith was rewarded in the short term when Forest stayed in the Premier League at the end of the 2022–23 season. Cooper later left in 2023, but this contract remains a major turning point in his Forest story.
