Birtles brace extends unbeaten run
On this day in 1978 Forest beat Wolves 3–1 during their 42-match unbeaten league run.
Garry Birtles helped keep Forest’s remarkable unbeaten league run moving with two goals in a 3–1 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Birtles scored twice at the City Ground, with Martin O’Neill adding the other Forest goal. The result came during the long unbeaten sequence that stretched across the club’s title-winning peak and into the following season.
For Forest, this was not only about avoiding defeat. Brian Clough’s side were defending champions by then, and opponents arrived knowing they were facing one of the most resilient teams in England.
The win over Wolves became one more link in a 42-match unbeaten league run, a sequence that still stands as one of the great statistical achievements in the club’s history. Birtles’ double gave the day its sharper individual memory.
