Dean Henderson loan arrival
On this day in 2022 Forest sign Dean Henderson on loan from Manchester United.
Dean Henderson joined Nottingham Forest on loan from Manchester United as the club prepared for its first Premier League season for 23 years.
The signing immediately felt significant because Forest were building a squad for a level many supporters had waited a generation to see again. Goalkeeper was a key position, and Henderson arrived with England recognition and Premier League experience.
He made an immediate impact, saving Declan Rice’s penalty as Forest beat West Ham United 1-0 in their first Premier League home game since 1999. Henderson also saved a Harry Kane penalty against Tottenham later that month, giving supporters early proof of his shot-stopping value.
His loan spell later became more complicated. Henderson remained Forest’s first-choice goalkeeper until a thigh injury suffered against Leicester City in January 2023 ended his season early.
For fans, the signing belonged to that first rush of Premier League return optimism, but it also became a reminder of how fragile survival planning could be. Henderson gave Forest important moments, yet his injury forced the club to adjust again during a difficult top-flight campaign.
