Nottingham Forest strengthened their attacking options on deadline day by signing Sam Surridge from Stoke City.

The move came during the surge under Steve Cooper, with Forest pushing from a poor start to the season towards the Championship play-off places. Surridge arrived for an undisclosed fee and gave the squad another centre-forward option for a demanding run-in.

His contribution became visible quickly. He scored his first Forest goal in the FA Cup fifth-round win over Huddersfield Town, then became a useful impact striker during the promotion push. Across the second half of the 2021–22 season, he scored seven Championship goals in 20 appearances as Forest climbed all the way to Wembley.

The season ended with promotion through the play-offs. Surridge did not start the final against Huddersfield, but his January arrival gave Cooper valuable depth and fresh energy at a crucial stage of the campaign.

Life in the Premier League was harder. Surridge was mostly used from the bench, though he did score an important late equaliser against former club Bournemouth in January 2023. As Forest rebuilt the squad again, his route to regular football narrowed.

In July 2023, Surridge left permanently for Nashville SC in Major League Soccer. His Forest spell was short, but it had a clear purpose: he arrived during the promotion charge, played his part in getting the club up, then moved on once Forest’s Premier League squad began to change.
