Major player signing

Nottingham Forest signed Joe Lolley from Huddersfield Town on deadline day, adding a winger who would become far more than a routine January arrival.

Lolley joined on a four-and-a-half-year deal after finding regular Premier League football difficult to come by at Huddersfield. Forest were in the Championship and needed attacking spark, width and a player capable of carrying the ball with purpose.

The move aged extremely well. Lolley quickly became one of Forest’s most watchable players, a left-footed winger who could drive inside, shoot from distance and turn flat games into something more dangerous. His best season came in 2018–19, when he was named Forest’s Player of the Season and also won Goal of the Season for his long-range strike in the remarkable 5–5 draw at Aston Villa.

His Forest output was strong across several difficult years. Lolley finished with 171 appearances, 26 goals and 27 assists in all competitions, including 11 league goals in 2018–19 and nine more in 2019–20. At a time when Forest were still trying to escape the Championship, he gave supporters flair, personality and genuine end product.

His role gradually faded after injuries, changes of manager and the squad’s promotion-season evolution. He was still part of the group that finally took Forest back to the Premier League in 2022, but the top-flight rebuild left him without a clear place.

In August 2022, Lolley left for Sydney FC. His Forest spell ended before he could play a Premier League role at the City Ground, but he departed as one of the most popular and productive players of the pre-promotion years.
