James Garner joins on loan
On this day in Nottingham Forest history in 2021 Forest sign James Garner on loan from Manchester United.
Nottingham Forest added James Garner on loan from Manchester United during a difficult Championship season, bringing in a young midfielder with technical quality and room to grow.
Garner had spent the first half of the campaign on loan at Watford before switching to the City Ground for the rest of the season. Forest needed more control and composure in midfield, and the move gave him a clearer platform to play regular football.
The loan became more than a short-term January fix. Garner returned for the following season and was part of the side that surged under Steve Cooper, reaching Wembley and winning promotion through the Championship play-offs.
For supporters, the first Garner loan now reads as the beginning of a relationship that grew in importance. What started as a mid-season loan became part of the story of Forest’s return to the Premier League.
