Nottingham Forest gave themselves a narrow but valuable UEFA Super Cup lead by beating Barcelona 1-0 at the City Ground.

The competition was a two-legged meeting between the holders of Europe’s two major trophies: Forest had won the European Cup, while Barcelona had lifted the European Cup Winners’ Cup. That made the tie another chance for Brian Clough’s side to test themselves against elite continental opposition.

Charlie George scored the only goal after nine minutes, heading in Trevor Francis’s cross to put Forest ahead against one of Europe’s biggest clubs. The early goal gave Forest something to defend and turned the return match in Spain into a test of control as much as ambition.

The scoreline was modest, but the opponent and the prize made it feel much larger. Forest were no longer just surprising Europe; they were collecting European honours.

The advantage proved decisive. Forest later drew the second leg 1-1 in Barcelona, winning the tie 2-1 on aggregate and adding the UEFA Super Cup to an extraordinary run of continental success.
