Remembrance display honours war vets
On this day in Nottingham Forest history in 2019 Forza Garibaldi unveil a Remembrance display honouring Forest war veterans before the Derby match.
Forza Garibaldi turned a derby-day Remembrance tribute into one of the Trent End’s most carefully considered displays.
Before the Derby County match, the group unveiled a banner honouring former Forest players who had served in the armed forces. The display featured George Hazard, Joe Mercer, William Fiske, Tom Peacock and Percy Ashton, chosen as representatives of the many men connected with the club who served during wartime.
The Trent End was decked out in the colours of the Sherwood Foresters regiment, giving the tribute a local connection as well as a club one. The wording across the display asked supporters to remember that these men had played with freedom on the pitch and fought for freedom away from it.
Because the match was against Derby, the symbolism carried an extra local edge. It was not just a poppy display or a routine pre-match gesture, but a supporter-led attempt to place real names and stories at the centre of Remembrance.
